A Strong Belief That Allah Is In Control Of Everything
Yaqeen is an Arabic word which is generally translated as certainty. In the way to Allah it is the basis of faith. Without yaqeen one cannot attain the highest level of faith. Moreover, this yaqeen (certainty) is not God-gifted rather one can gain it in the company of a perfect and accomplished spiritual guide.
What is Yaqeen meaning?
According to Oxford Dictionaries, certainty (yaqeen) means the quality of being reliably true and firm conviction that something is the case.
Generally certainty (yaqeen) means believing a man to be true to such an extent that one must be loyal to him and even sacrifice his life and property for him. He continues to accept whole heartedly and devotedly his every word to be true no matter how much someone tried to instigate against him but he persist in believing him with a contended heart.
Certainty in the view of Sayyid Mohammad Zauqi:
In the view of Sayyid Mohammad Zauqi:
- Certainty (yaqeen) is that state where there is no doubt or suspicion is involved.
Certainty (Yaqin) in the view of Bayazid Bastami:
Bayazid Bastami says:
- Certainty (yaqeen) is another name of tawhid.
What are Types of Yaqeen in Quran?
There are three types of yaqeen:
- Ilm al-Yaqeen (knowledge of certainty)
- Ayn al-Yaqeen (eye of certainty)
- Haq al-Yaqeen (truth of certainty)
For instance, a man is looking at his reflection in the mirror but he does not know that there is a mirror in front of him. He only knows that there is a person like me in front of me, so this state is ilm al-Yaqeen (knowledge of certainty). Similarly, if that person knows that I am seeing my own reflection but he did not know the reality of himself, the mirror and the reflection, then this condition is ayn al-Yaqeen (eye of certainty). If the beholder knows the reality of his self, mirror and the reflection, then this state is haq al-Yaqeen (truth of certainty).
Ilm al-Yaqeen (Knowledge of certainty)
We can understand the concept of ilm al-Yaqeen from the event of Meraj (the night Ascension). When the disbelievers of Makkah were informed of this incident, they expressed their astonishment at it, denying it and mocking it. But when Abu Bakr Siddiq came to know about the incident, he utters such historical words that, on one hand show the depth of his faith and belief and on the other hand it was a reasoned answer to the objections of the infidels.
Abu Bakr Siddiq’s reply to Infidels
Abu Bakr Siddiq said:
- If the Holy Prophet has said this then he has told the truth. Why do you people not believe on that? I swear to God! When the Holy Prophet informs me that revelation comes to him from the heavens to the earth in a moment of day and night, I do believe on it.
Abu Bakr Siddiq meant that if I believe in the revelation of the Holy Prophet from heaven, then what could be the reason for not believing in ascension of the Holy Prophet to heaven? Why can’t the Almighty, who can send revelation to his beloved from heaven, take him to heaven?
Abu Bakr Siddiq’s reply to Infidels is the perfect example of ilm al-yaqeen
Abu Bakr Siddiq heard about Meraj from the sacred tongue of the Holy Prophet and believed in it whole-heartedly. This is the most perfect example of ilm al-Yaqeen (knowledge of certainty). At this level a person, without seeing something with his own eyes and without experiencing it for oneself, believes in the news on the basis of trustworthiness and honesty of the news giver.
Ayn al-Yaqeen (Eye of certainty)
Allah has explained Ayn al-Yaqeen in the Holy Quran in the context of Prophet Abraham.
Meaning: And in the same way, We showed Ibrahim (Abraham) all the kingdoms of the heavens and the earth (i.e., the wonders of Our creation) so that he might be one of those who possess the eye of certitude. (6:75)
Divine Observation is Required for Higher Degree of Certainty
Some people are of the view that this verse means that Allah had lifted every veil from the eyes of Prophet Abraham and everything from the Divine Throne to the clandestine was shown to him. Whereas, others are of the view that reality of all things in the Earth and the skies had endued upon him so that he would be aware of all the hidden as well as apparent things in the universe and attain the highest degree of certainty (yaqeen) about the Divine Oneness, Knowledge, Power and Wisdom.
Prophet Ishmael’s Level of Certainty (Yaqeen)
In the Holy Quran Allah mentions that Prophet Abraham told Prophet Ishmael:
Meaning: ‘O my son, I have seen in a dream that I am sacrificing you. So think, what is your opinion?’ Isma‘il (Ishmael) said: ‘O my father, do that (immediately) which you are being commanded. If Allah wills, you will find me amongst the patient (and steadfast).’ (37:102)
He was thirteen years old at the time, but he had highest degree of trust on his father. That is why, he agreed to sacrifice himself. It is the highest level of ilm al-Yaqeen. Moreover, it was a test of his trust and he became successful in it. Allah sent a ram from the heaven to slaughter, which was a proof of his success in the trial.
Prophet Abraham’s Level of Certainty (Yaqeen)
When Nimrod threw Prophet Abraham into the fire, he refused to take the help of Gabriel. He believed in Allah Almighty that He is aware of my inner state and is watching over me. Verily Allah has given the ability to fire to burn. Fire cannot burn me unless Allah commands and pleases. He will save me from the fire if He wills. So Allah fulfilled his belief.
Do we think the same way? Are we sure that our Almighty Allah is watching and observing us?
In the beginning of Holy Quran Allah Almighty declared that only those can get righteousness from it who believe in al-Ghaib (the unseen\the hidden) and they are the righteous.
Allah says in the Holy Quran:
ہُدًی لِّلۡمُتَّقِیۡنَ ۙ﴿۲﴾ الَّذِیۡنَ یُؤۡمِنُوۡنَ بِالۡغَیۡبِ ۙ﴿۳﴾
Meaning: (It is) a guide for those who guard against evil and fear Allah and for those who believe in the unseen. (2: 2-3)
Allah bestowed the Holy Prophet with the knowledge of unseen. One who does not have certainty (yaqeen) in unseen; he cannot gain beneficence from the Holy Quran. Only the one, who has certainty (yaqeen) in unseen, is righteous.
Divine Proximity depends upon the Degree of Certainty (Yaqeen)
Allah says in the Holy Quran:
اَللّٰہُ نُوْرُ السَّمٰوٰتِ وَالْاَرْضِ﴿ۙ۳۵﴾
Meaning: Allah is the light of the heavens and the earth. (24:35)
Divine light is in every particle of this universe. Level of Divine proximity depends upon the degree of certainty (yaqeen). The more a person is certain about the presence of Divine light the more he attains Divine closeness. Non-Muslims and disbelievers do not have the wealth of certainty (yaqeen) in Divine light so they are unable to gain beneficence from Divine light.
Rumi’s views about Certainty (Yaqeen)
If you have highest degree of certainty (yaqeen) then you will be successful in both the worlds i.e. this world and the world hereafter. The body you have is immortal. Allah has given it to you for this world. So, annihilate it through mystic endeavours. There will come a time when this temporary body will be taken away from you and you will lose the treasure that is hidden in it. Then you will regret that I have lost the treasure and I have ruined the water conferring immortality. It is because the one, who does not have certainty (yaqeen), is deprived of the knowledge of Prophet Mohammad on the basis of his intelligence and wisdom. Then he will regret that I got lost in the carved decorative patterns and designs of the house and deprived of the treasures.
Here treasure means Allah Himself. As He says in Qudsi Hadith;
Meaning: I was a hidden Treasure; I desired to be recognised, so I created the creation.
Reason Of Discomfort – Low Level Of Certainty (Yaqeen)
We are the ones who, despite all the comforts, have sad hearts, sorrowful faces, restless souls and a depressed nature. We never have intrinsic happiness. For what and Why not? What is the reason?
It is because we do not have certainty (yaqeen) that Allah is the one who is looking after the system of this universe. When we do not believe that our Lord is Allah and this life is His trust; He has given us some rules to live this life and those rules are the best, then we can never live our life in the right way.
To live a purposeful life we should have highest level of certainty (yaqeen) in Allah
To live a purposeful life we should have highest level of certainty (yaqeen) in Allah, His commands, His Prophets and Saints who convey His commands to us. One hundred and twenty four thousand Prophets came to this world and eventually left this world after passing His message to us. Allah sent them as human beings so that they could remove the doubts from our hearts and revitalize the certainty (yaqeen) of Divine love. After the termination of Prophethood, He is sending perfect fakirs i.e. universal Divine man, to instill in us this belief, which assures us of the Oneness of Allah.
Without Certainty One cannot Travel on the Path of Marifa
How can we gain certainty (yaqeen) in the Oneness of Allah unless we trust the one whose duty is to make us certain about His Oneness? Without yaqeen (certainty) we cannot travel on the path of marifa. We will ruin our life in hereafter, if we will leave this world without marifa. In order to gain marifa, we have to find a living perfect spiritual guide, until we find a perfect spiritual guide, trust him and follow him completely; we will not be able to understand our purpose of life let alone achieving it.
Allama Iqbal’s Views About Certainty
Allama Iqbal was convinced that only the proximity of universal Divine man and highest level of certainty (yaqeen) in him gives strength to the soul which is present inside this body, and it can break all the chains of slavery and travel toward Allah. He says:
Explanation: Allama Iqbal says that if your earthly body gains certainty (yaqeen), then spiritually it will be like Gabriel without wings. Moreover, when ilm al-yaqeen (knowledge of certainty) will transform into haq al-yaqeen (truth of certainty), you will not need a sword or tactics. Allah will remove very obstacle in your way will be removed due to the power of haq al-yaqeen (truth of certainty). You will be fearless of death. Even due to your haq al-yaqeen (truth of certainty), death will die its demise.
Have Certainty in Saints is Essential To Walk On Straight Path
The correct belief is that which is of Saints. The belief of Saints is the straight path, so it is very important to have faith in Saints. Regarding the Companions of the Holy Prophet who were endowed with the insight of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him), the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) also said that my Companions are like the ark of Prophet Noah for the Divine seekers.
Certainty of Prophet Noah’s son
Prophet Noah’s son did not believe his father’s words and refused to sit in the ark, saying, “I will go up the mountain.”
The Holy Quran replied:
لَا عَاصِمَ الۡیَوۡمَ ﴿۴۳﴾
Meaning: None can save today. (11:43)
So, he could not escape because he did not believe his father.
Certainty of Pharoah
Pharaoh himself raised Prophet Moses, but when Prophet Moses told him the reality that there is another power that rules us and that is Allah. He did not believe him nor did Moses’ miracles which Allah had given to him. That is why Pharaoh drowned in the Nile.
Without Perfect Spiritual Guide One Cannot Attain Certainty (Yaqin)
Hence, the sole reason for being unsuccessful in both the worlds is to not believe in those who bring Allah’s message to us. For all the true and sincere Divine seekers, it is obligatory to seek a spiritual guide and then follow him fully and believe in his each single command, every word and every deed.
Prophet Mohammad says:
Meaning: Every act of the Hakeem (the All Wise) is based on wisdom. (Shams-ul-Arifeen)
The perfect Fakir is also blessed with this Divine attribute. Therefore, only that disciple will be successful in the path of Faqr who has perfect certainty (yaqeen) in his spiritual guide.
Sultan Bahoo’s views about Certainty (Yaqeen)
Sultan Bahoo says:
Meaning: The real spiritual asset is the true faith and belief (yaqeen) in your spiritual guide. If you have this asset you can cross the seven skies and reach the ultimate spiritual heights. (Shams-ul-Arifeen)
Meaning: Real faith (yaqeen) is the faith (yaqeen) which takes you to the Beloved and intimates you to the Divine secrets of Kun (Be). (Shams-ul-Arifeen)
In this age of materialism and sedition, Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman is purifying rusty inwards with efficacy of his spiritual sight. Moreover, he is spiritually elevating the seekers of world into Divine seekers and bestowing them with the Nur of Faqr. Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen holds the highest spiritual station of Faqr. Therefore, he spiritually elevates the Divine seekers from the level of ilm al-yaqeen (knowledge of certainty) to haq al-yaqeen (truth of certainty) through spiritual observation.
Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen also grants Ism-e-Allah Zaat for invocation, contemplation and mashq murqoom-e-wajudia. With the efficacy of dhikr Ya Hoo the sincere seeker acquires marifa. Moreover, his relationship with Allah becomes stronger gradually and his belief (yaqeen) in perfect spiritual guide also becomes stronger. It is an open invitation for all the Divine seekers to gain beneficence from the highly esteemed and exalted personality of Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen and gain blessing of certainty (yaqeen).
Yaqeen is the basis of Islam. One cannot attain perfection in Islam if yaqeen is not there. Moreover, yaqeen is a firm conviction that something is the case.
