Sultan ul Arifeen Sultan Bahoo has also explained the secrets and effects of contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad. He declares that only that spiritual guide (Murshid / Shaikh) is perfect who knows the way of both Ism-e-Allah Zaat and Ism-e-Mohammad. He says that in addition to the invocation and contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat, the contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad is also necessary.
One reaches the Mohammadan Assembly through the contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad
During the life of the Holy Prophet, his sacred Companions passed all the spiritual stages of gnosis (marifa / marifat) by having the privilege of looking at his sacred countenance and by his closeness (qurb) and spiritual glance (nigah). After him, all the seekers of Allah (Talib-e-Maula / Mawla) find presence in the Mohammadan Assembly through the contemplation of his sacred name and get his spiritual beneficence.
Without the Prophet’s guidance and help no one has ever reached Allah. Moreover no one ever will. Unless he cast sacred glance, the soul of a seeker does not become alive. Further he does not find gnosis and union. In this age, the only way to get beneficence of his spiritual glance is by the invocation and contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat and contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad. As they take the seeker to the Mohammadan Assembly. It also grants him the honour of having the company of the Holy Prophet and his sacred Companions. When a seeker stays in this sacred assembly with patience, perseverance, respect, modesty, complete devotion, and obedience, cutting off from all his material relations and desires, only then he becomes capable of having the gnosis and union with Allah. Also he reaches the station of belovedness.
Ism-e-Mohammad the most powerful name of Prophet Mohammad
There are infinite attributive names of Allah but Allah ( اللہ ) is His personal name. Similarly, there are many attributive names of the Holy Prophet but Mohammad ( محمد ) is his personal name. Importantly Allah ( اللہ ) is the most powerful name of Allah. Similar to it Mohammad ( محمد ) is the most effective and powerful name of the Holy Prophet.
Manifestation of the name of Prophet Mohammad
The name Mohammad ( محمد ) manifested when there was nothing except the light (Noor / Nur) of Allah and the theophanies (tajalli) of light of Mohammad. So Ism-e-Mohammad itself is entirely Divine light and theophanies. Moreover it possesses miraculous powers and grandeur. Initially, the light of Allah manifested in the form of light of Mohammad. When the Saints reveal the fact that Allah first of all manifested Himself at pre-existence (azal) in the form of Ism-e-Allah Zaat. Then, by saying ‘Essence (Zaat)’ they actually refer to the light or Essence of Mohammad. As it is the first manifestation of the light of Allah. So Ism-e-Mohammad is not separate or different from Ism-e-Allah Zaat. Rather Ism-e-Mohammad is in Ism-e-Allah Zaat and Ism-e-Allah Zaat is in Ism-e-Mohammad. That is why Allah has declared His beloved Mohammad’s hand as His Hand and his words as Allah’s Words. As Allah says in the Quran:
اِنَّ الَّذِیۡنَ یُبَایِعُوۡنَکَ اِنَّمَا یُبَایِعُوۡنَ اللّٰہَ ؕ یَدُ اللّٰہِ فَوۡقَ اَیۡدِیۡہِمۡ ۚ فَمَنۡ نَّکَثَ فَاِنَّمَا یَنۡکُثُ عَلٰی نَفۡسِہٖ ۚ وَ مَنۡ اَوۡفٰی بِمَا عٰہَدَ عَلَیۡہُ اللّٰہَ فَسَیُؤۡتِیۡہِ اَجۡرًا عَظِیۡمًا ﴿٪۱۰﴾
Meaning: (O Beloved!) Indeed, those who pledge allegiance to you in fact pledge allegiance to Allah alone. Allah’s hand is over their hands. (Al-Fath 10)
وَ مَا یَنۡطِقُ عَنِ الۡہَوٰی ؕ﴿۳﴾
اِنۡ ہُوَ اِلَّا وَحۡیٌ یُّوۡحٰی ۙ﴿۴﴾
Meaning: And he does not speak out of his (own) desire. His speech is nothing but Revelation, which is sent to him (by Allah). (An-Najm 3-4)
Seeing Allah in the form of Ism-e-Allah Zaat
When the seekers of Allah wish to have His vision, union and the gnosis. Then it is possible for them only in the form of Ism-e-Allah Zaat. Except the Holy Prophet no one can dare to see the unveiled light of Allah and understand the nature of it directly. Only the Holy Prophet, due to his ultimate nearness with Allah, can see the light of Allah in its actual and unveiled form. To see Allah in the form of Ism-e-Allah Zaat and have His union and the gnosis, a seeker has to perform the invocation and contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat by acquiring the way of Faqr.
Two names of same Divine Entity
While explaining about Ism-e-Allah Zaat, Sultan Bahoo says that Ism-e-Mohammad is a part of Ism-e-Allah Zaat. In Mehak-ul-Faqr Kalan he says:
- The Holy Prophet said:
Meaning: Faqr is my pride.
This means that the path of Faqr begins with Ism-e-Allah Zaat. Fakirs attain their level by Ism-e-Allah Zaat. Ism-e-Allah Zaat is the pride of the Holy Prophet. Ism-e-Allah Zaat transforms into Ism-e-Mohammad. As Allah says in a Qudsi Hadith:
Meaning: (O Mohammad!) I am you and you are Me.
This shows that these two names are of the same Divine Entity. That is why he said:
اَلۡفَقۡرُ فَخۡرِیۡ وَالۡفَقۡرُ مِنِّی
Meaning: Faqr is my pride and Faqr is from me. (Mehak-ul-Faqr Kalan)
Ism-e-Mohammad is Divine beauty (al-Jamal) and Ism-e-Allah Zaat is both Divine beauty and majesty (al-Jamal and al-Jalal)
So, Ism-e-Mohammad has all the powers and effects of Ism-e-Allah Zaat. However Ism-e-Allah Zaat has the Divine majesty (al-Jalal) as well as the Divine beauty (al-Jamal). It has both Wrath and Kindness. While Ism-e-Mohammad has Jamal only. It is the absolute Compassion and Mercy. So it has more pleasant effects on the inward of a seeker. By the contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad the seeker becomes completely obedient to the laws of sharia. Moreover becomes fully compliant to Allah. Sultan Bahoo where fully explained and described Ism-e-Allah Zaat there he also narrates the knowledge, effects and marvels of Ism-e-Mohammad.
Powers of letters of Ism-e-Mohammad
The exegesis of Ism-e-Mohammad by Sultan ul Arifeen Sultan Bahoo is:
- From the letter (M) of محمد one gains gnosis of Allah and by the letter (H) the presence in the Mohammadan Assembly. By the second (M) of Mohammad one observes both the worlds and by the letter (D) all the objectives are gained just in the beginning. All these four letters are like an unsheathe sword to kill the infidel inciting innerself (nafs). (Kaleed-e-Jannat)
In his book Aqal-e-Baydar, Sultan Bahoo narrates of the stations gained due to contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad. Moreover he talked of experiencing theophanies from its letters as:
- Ism-e-Mohammad has four Arabic letters which are (M) م, (H) ح, (M) م and (D) د. From command over the (first) م (M) one gains access to the Mohammadan Assembly. Moreover the command over ح (H) is presence in the Mohammadan Assembly. The command over (second) م (M) is absorption in the light of Mohammad. Moreover د (D) means not a single breath is void of the conversation of the Prophet Mohammad. (Aqal-e-Baydar)
Every letter of Ism-e-Mohammad ( محمد ) possesses great power and efficacy.
Effects of Ism-e-Mohammad on innerself (nafs), soul and spiritual self (batin)
When a seeker practices the contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad with the permission of the perfect spiritual guide, he feels very positive changes in his innerself (nafs) and spiritual self (batin). This is by the luminous effects of the light of these letters. Gradually he starts acquiring the morals and attributes of the Holy Prophet which make the Holy Prophet the beloved of Allah. His innerself (nafs) dies and the soul becomes alive. His soul liberates from the limitations of the physical body and boundaries of the material world. Thus reaches the Mohammadan Assembly where the Holy Prophet himself guides him. He acquires his sacred attributes and becomes the beloved of Allah.
Sins hide in the coverlet of Ism-e-Allah Zaat
While discussing the effects of contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad on the personality of the seeker, Sultan ul Arifeen Sultan Bahoo stated:
When a seeker is absorbed in the contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat, Ism-e-Mohammad and Islamic creed (Kalimah Tayyibah), all his sins hide in the coverlet of the light of Ism-e-Allah Zaat. (Mohabbat-ul-Asrar)
Effects of Ism-e-Mohammad
The person who contemplates Ism-e-Mohammad, his every word is absorbed in the light of Mohammad. Contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad affects the seeker in such a way that he gets blessings of lustrous insight, grand magnificence, company of the Holy Prophet, a sanctified inward and the straight Divine path (Sirat-e-Mustaqeem). He (reaches the stage of Fana-Fi-Rasool i.e. annihilation in the Prophet in such a way that he) becomes one with the body and soul of the Holy Prophet. He listens with the Holy Prophet’s ears. Sees with his eyes. Speaks with his tongue. Moreover walks with his steps. He wears the coverlet of sharia. Ism-e-Mohammad ( محمد ) has four letters ( م ,ح ,م ,د ). They contain both the worlds. Contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad reveals the secrets of both the worlds upon the seeker. When a seeker contemplates Ism-e-Mohammad then the Holy Prophet along with the sacred Companions bestow upon the seeker their presence. (Mohabbat-ul-Asrar)
The Holy Prophet and sacred Companions visit the one who contemplates Ism-e-Mohammad
When a devotee contemplates Ism-e-Mohammad, no doubt the Holy Prophet and his sacred Companions come to him spiritually. The Holy Prophet says to him:
“Hold my hands.”
The very moment he holds the hands of the Holy Prophet, his inward and soul illuminates with the light of the gnosis. Moreover he becomes capable of giving the Divine guidance to others. The Holy Prophet says to the man of contemplation to guide the mankind. Thus, such possessor of contemplation blesses the people with guidance and persuasion. (Kaleed-e-Jannat)
Reality of gnosis
By the contemplation of the Ism-e-Mohammad, one gains the reality of gnosis. (Kaleed-e-Jannat)
Beloved of Allah and lover of the Prophet
When one contemplates Ism-e-Mohammad, he relinquishes everything except Allah. Moreover he sees the Mohammadan Assembly everywhere. He becomes the humble and modest lover of the Holy Prophet and the beloved of Allah Almighty. (Aqal-e-Baydar)
Exoteric knowledge and esoteric knowledge
One must know that the contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat, Ism-e-Mohammad and Islamic creed opens two types of knowledge on the man of contemplation. The exoteric knowledge and the esoteric knowledge. Exoteric knowledge refers to prayers and related matters. While esoteric knowledge is gnosis and Oneness (Tawhid / Tauheed). Moreover it is witnessing the light of Essence (i.e. Essence of Allah). As there are only two types of knowledge, firstly the knowledge of physical matters and secondly, revelation. (Kaleed-e-Jannat)
How light of Ism-e-Mohammad effects the body?
When light of Ism-e-Mohammad enters the body of a seeker (through contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad), all his matters are solved by (the blessing of) Ism-e-Mohammad. (Aqal-e-Baydar)
Presence in the Mohammadan Assembly
Ism-e-Mohammad enters the inward, it takes the seeker in the Mohammadan Assembly. He reaches in the assembly, sees and recognizes it and finds presence there. (Kashf-ul-Asrar)
Four levels of contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad
There are four levels of contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad ( محمد ). They grant four kinds of Divine favour.
The first level
The first level is that whosoever contemplates Ism-e-Mohammad in inward, his soul becomes alive. Furthermore his innerself (nafs) dies. This contemplation has the authority to take to the level of annihilation in Ism-e-Mohammad. It is the level of the perfect Fakir.
The second level
Second level is that when the Ism-e-Mohammad enters the inward, it takes the seeker in the sacred Mohammadan Assembly. He reaches in the assembly, sees and recognizes it and finds presence there.
The third level
When one acquires permanent contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad, every part and whole of the universe is exposed upon his sight. Additionally Allah forgives him according to the verse:
لِّيَـغۡفِرَ لَكَ اللّٰهُ مَا تَقَدَّمَ مِنۡ ذَنۡۢبِكَ وَ مَا تَاَخَّرَ
Meaning: So that Allah forgives, for your sake, all the earlier and later sins. (Al-Fath-2)
Such a possessor of contemplation (of Ism-e-Mohammad) should be a true man. Not a human being having qualities of animals.
The fourth level
Fourth level is that by the contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad one gains the Divine presence and its knowledge. By having the knowledge of vision, the seeker reaches the level of Divine vision. Then there remain no wishes in his inward (as all his wishes fulfill). Through this impression the Divine knowledge of presence before Prophet Mohammad is gained on the very first day. As it is the witness to the knowledge of Divine presence. Seeking anything except the Divine presence is a sin. There is spiritual guide who does not take the seekers to the level of Divine presence step by step. Moreover it means that he also does not let them have persuasion directly from Prophet Mohammad. This is so as he is depraved and his disciples are eventually disgraced. (Kashf-ul-Asrar)
Contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad saves from the tricks of Satan
The contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad saves the seeker from the tricks of Satan and innerself (nafs). Moreover it saves from ignorance and misbelief. Sultan Bahoo said:
- The seeker of Allah must get control over his mind and all his thoughts. This is through contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat and Ism-e-Mohammad. Hence, a fire is set ablaze in his essence by the invocation of his inward and soul. It turns him completely against his innerself (nafs), Satan and (the lusts of) the material world. (Mehak-ul-Faqr)
Ism-e-Mohammad is the straight path (Sirat-e-Mustaqeem)
Ism-e-Allah Zaat is the greatest name of Allah (Ism-e-Azam) and Ism-e-Mohammad has the straight Divine path. (Mehak-ul-Faqr Kalan)
Satan fears Ism-e-Mohammad
You must know that the Holy Prophet is the righteous guide in both the worlds. Having the privilege of seeing his holy self enhances and adorns the faith. Keep in mind that Allah has sent him only for guidance on the right path. Satan can never be a righteous guide. He can never acquire the sacred countenance of Prophet Mohammad. Moreover a Muslim can ever get righteousness from him. Satan fears from Ism-e-Allah Zaat, Ism-e-Mohammad and righteousness. Satan is afraid of them just like a non-Muslim fears from Islamic creed. As it is like a killing sword for him. (Mehak-ul-Faqr Kalan)
Fakir gets free of ignorance
Beholding Prophet Mohammad is to have Divine observation of pre-existence by Allah’s grace and beneficence. Furthermore it removes all ignorance from their (Fakirs) entity. This is the greatest change (of human nature) for the better. They gain highest spiritual level. Moreover they gain the Divine vision through meditation, contemplation and struggle. If eyes (of seeker of Allah) remain focused on the greatest name (Ism-e-Allah Zaat) and Ism-e-Mohammad then all the contemplation, authority, eulogies and Divine presence are for him. (Aqal-e-Baydar)
One lac and seventy-three types of infidelity
Be aware that there are one lac and seventy-three knots (types) of infidelity and polytheism in a human. (They break by the contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat). By adopting this way (of Ism-e-Allah Zaat) the seeker finds honour in the very beginning with presence before Allah Almighty. Furthermore he also finds presence in the Mohammadan Assembly. He sees the most exalted in the realm of Divinity (LaHoot). It is the station of no station (La-Makan). Divine light gets absorbed (loses its entity) in Divine light. Neither body nor soul is there. How can ignorant beasts (apparent humans but inwardly animals) know these stations? If you sacrifice yourself for Ism-e-Mohammad with devotion and perfect belief, you will find honour by witnessing the sacred countenance of the Holy Prophet a thousand of times. You should have belief that this path of pious men is both beneficent and has Allah’s grace. (Aqal-e-Baydar)
It is difficult to acquire the path of Faqr of Prophet Mohammad
It is easy to find presence in the Mohammadan Assembly but it is very difficult to achieve righteousness and sainthood like him. Moreover it’s difficult to adopt his habits and morals, his command over both the worlds, his attributes of the renunciation of world, his complete faith in Allah and submission to fate and the will of Allah. In short, it is very difficult to acquire the Faqr of Prophet Mohammad completely. (Kaleed-ul-Tauheed Khurd)
It is possible to cross the above stations only by the sacred attention of the Holy Prophet for which the contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad is necessary.
Seeing Allah, the Unparalleled
Sultan ul Arifeen Sultan Bahoo said:
Meaning: If I can see Allah Almighty, the Unparalleled, it is because of the (sacred attention and) company of the Holy Prophet.
Eternal companion of the Prophet
Meaning: A person who wants to reach a certain (spiritual) station then he should become eternal companion of the Holy Prophet. (It means to attain eternal presence in the Mohammadan Assembly through the contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad).
Inward remains with the Prophet
Meaning: An inward (content of the desires of both the worlds) is forever with the Holy Prophet. (It means he is present in the Mohammadan Assembly). He is not dependent on anyone.
Mystic immortal with Allah remains in the Mohammadan Assembly
Meaning: They do not beg for charity. A Mystic immortal with Allah (Arif Billah) remains in the Mohammadan Assembly.
Annihilation (Fana) in the Prophet
A seeker reaches the station of annihilation in the Prophet (Fana-Fi-Rasool) only after having eternal presence in the Mohammadan Assembly. It afterwards blesses him with the final station of annihilation in Allah and being immortal with Him (Fana-Fillah Baqa Billah).
Three levels of a true seeker
Sultan Bahoo said:
There are three levels of a true seeker. First is the level of annihilation in the spiritual guide (Fana-Fi-Shaikh). When a seeker contemplates the countenance of the perfect spiritual guide, he observes the marvels of the authority of his spiritual guide everywhere.
Second is the level of annihilation in Ism-e-Mohammad (Fana-Fi-Ism-e-Mohammad). When the seeker contemplates the countenance and beautiful name of Mohammad, everything other than Allah eliminates from his inward. Moreover wherever he looks he observes the Mohammadan Assembly.
Third is the level of annihilation in Allah (Fana Fillah). When the seeker contemplates the Divine Name, his innerself (nafs) dies completely. Wherever he looks, he observes infinite theophanies of the light of Allah. One beholds the light of Allah on reaching the station of no station (La-Makan). It is beyond all levels and stations. As considering Allah bounded in time and space is absolute disbelief. (Shams-ul-Arifeen)
Favourite of Prophet Mohammad
When the scholar having the gnosis of Allah annihilates in Ism-e-Mohammad, he becomes favourite of Prophet Mohammad. Furthermore, a favourite of all the Saints. Such a person is a scholar, practitioner of his knowledge and also a perfect Fakir. He is the beloved disciple of al-Ghawth al-Azam Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani. Moreover by his grace, he becomes indifferent to all the needs. (Fazal-ul-Laqa)
Without the attention of the Perfect Spiritual Guide nothing is possible
However, one must keep it in mind that he cannot gain these blessings of contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad without the attention and persuasion of the perfect and accomplished spiritual guide. The efficacy of contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad reaches the inward only when one practices with the permission and under the guidance of the perfect spiritual guide. Unless he opens the lock of inward, the effects of contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad cannot reach it.
Satan and the inciting innerself (an-nafs al-ammarah) cannot enter the Mohammadan Assembly
Sultan Bahoo said:
When the spiritual guide grants Ism-e-Mohammad to the seeker, he finds the blessing with the presence of the Mohammadan Assembly. This happens on the very first day. It is impossible for the cursed Satan and the inciting innerself (an-nafs al-ammarah) to enter the company of Prophet Mohammad. This is the sacred way of the Divine presence of Ism-e-Allah Zaat. Through which the seeker can observe pre-existence as well as the eternity. He can have the view of the treasures of the world, chaos of the doomsday, Divine closeness and presence, houries and castles of the heaven, paradise and the hell. The perfect spiritual guide is that who reveals the hidden realities upon the seeker through the contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat and Ism-e-Mohammad. Further he gives him the Divine persuasion so that the seeker gains complete trust and faith. (Aqal-e-Baydar)
A doubtful person cannot enter the Mohammadan Assembly
To obtain all these blessings of contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad and to reach the Mohammadan Assembly, the disciple must be sincere. Moreover he should be steadfast and should have complete belief in this way of the Divine presence. The disciple who has doubts about the occurrence of the Mohammadan Assembly can never find presence there. If by the beneficence of the spiritual guide, he enters the assembly, he can never stay here for long due to his malicious inward.
Spiritual guide knows when to grant Ism-e-Mohammad
It is completely upto the perfect and accomplished spiritual guide of the Sarwari Qadri order that when he decides to grant contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad to the disciple. He may grant Ism-e-Allah Zaat in the beginning. Then after some time he may grant Ism-e-Mohammad. Moreover he may also grant both at the same time. The disciple should follow the spiritual guide submissively. He should not make decisions by himself. The spiritual guide is spiritual doctor. He knows about all the inner diseases of the disciple and their remedies. Therefore a disciple should always act upon his advice. The disciple who follows his own will can never succeed because Faqr is the way of complete submission.
DENIER OF ISM-E-ALLAH ZAAT AND ISM-E-MOHAMMAD
Sultan ul Arifeen Sultan Bahoo says about the denier of Ism-e-Allah Zaat and Ism-e-Mohammad:
- One who forbids from Ism-e-Allah Zaat and its invocation is a hypocrite and infidel or jealous and arrogant. (Ain-ul-Faqr)
- The denier of Ism-e-Allah Zaat and Ism-e-Mohammad is the second Abu Jahl or Pharaoh. (Qurb-e-Deedar)
- One who does not believe in Ism-e-Allah Zaat and Ism-e-Mohammad is surely a hypocrite. Ism-e-Allah Zaat is the most exalted name of Allah. Ism-e-Mohammad is the straight path. (Mehak-ul-Faqr Kalan)
It is evident from the Quranic verses, Hadiths and sayings of the perfect Saints mentioned in this topic that unless a seeker invokes and contemplates Ism-e-Allah Zaat and contemplates Ism-e-Mohammad, he cannot get rid of his innerself (nafs) and Satan. Neither his inward purifies nor do his exoteric and esoteric selves coordinate. This is true even if he spends all his life in physical prayers, recitation of the Quran, learning the laws of Islam or doing hard mystic exercises and becomes thin like thread while doing so.
Every religious act has become superficial in this contemporary age
Moreover, in this materialistic age sincerity, truth and pure urge are very rare. Nowadays, people neither have the time nor courage to do excessive pious deeds and hard mystic struggle to reach Allah, like our righteous ancestors did. Prayers and all the religious obligations have now become superficial acts without any soul.
Explanation: The people of today no longer performs selfless pious deeds and mystic endeavours. Hence do not have eternal union with Allah, His vision and gnosis. Their inward is void of desire of Divine love. They make the religious obligations such as the prayer, fast, sacrifice (of animal during Eid-ul-Adha) and hajj superficial acts without soul. People no longer performs the religious obligations for Allah Almighty Himself.
The invocation and contemplation of Ism-e-Allah Zaat, practice of inscribing Allah’s name on body (mashq murqoom-e-wajudia) and contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad are the only ways to kill the innerself (nafs) and revitalize the dead soul. When the soul becomes alive, the seeker gets the blessing of the Divine vision. However, its condition is that the seeker has gained Ism-e-Allah Zaat (personal name of Allah) and contemplation of Ism-e-Mohammad from the perfect spiritual guide of Sarwari Qadri order. As he is the man of Divine Essence (Sahib-e-Musamma).
