Reality of Being Grateful to Allah

Honouring the Blessing and using it for the benefit of mankind

Meaning of being grateful to Allah

The literal meaning of being grateful to Allah is to praise the Benefactor and to be thankful for His blessings.

The conventional meaning of being grateful to Allah is the feeling of thankfulness that comes from the bottom of heart for His infinite Kindness, His attributes of Lordship, Providence, Mercy, Compassion, Forgiveness and for each and every blessing.

When man becomes truly grateful?

When man consciously observes his ownself and the powers prevailing in the universe then he realizes that his earthen body, his life and its evolution is just the blessing and miracle of Allah. When he ponders deeply then he sees that every creation is busy in serving him so that his life becomes comfortable. Because Allah says to man that “I have created everything only for you, but I have created you for Myself.” Hence when we acknowledge each favour and blessing of Allah Who is the Provider of everything and become grateful to Him from the bottom of our heart we call it being truly grateful. Then as the gnosis of Allah and increases, man further realizes the favours and blessings of Allah and becomes more and more grateful deeply and passionately.

Who is a true grateful?

Being truly grateful to Allah is the station of Prophets and Saints. The people who are grateful to Allah are closest to Allah that is why they are very few in the world. Allah says;

Meaning: And very few of My servants are grateful! (34:13)

Meaning: And Allah will soon reward those who are grateful (by remaining steadfast in hardship). (3:144)

Meaning: And whoever is grateful it is for his own good; and whoever is not grateful, then surely Allah is Self-Sufficient, Worthy of all praises. (31:12)

The importance of being grateful to Allah

Allama Ibn Qayyim writes in his book Madarij-al-Salikeen:

Allah says:

“The invokers of My Name truly deserve My Company. Those who are grateful receive more goodness from Me. The obedient ones are more respectful near Me. I do not disappoint  even the ones who are disobedient to Me. Hence, if the sinners repent from their sins then I am their Friend and if they do not then I am their Doctor. I put them in trials to cleanse them through difficulties.”

Hence, be grateful to Allah, He will never forget you.  When you will be grateful on His every blessing then He will bless you even more. Being grateful to Allah is the best kind of worship and He knows what you do.

Thus we should be ever grateful to Allah.

Different kinds of being grateful

There are different kinds of gratitude. Being grateful individually for the blessing is different from collective gratefulness.

Being grateful for each blessing individually:

One can be grateful to Allah individually for many reasons because Allah deals with his every slave individually and bless him so that He can test how grateful is that slave! There can be different occasions of being grateful to Allah individually for example being grateful on having;

  • Kind and virtuous parents
  • Good progeny
  • Excessive wealth and proper source of income
  • Good and healthy lifestyle
  • Complete and healthy body organs
  • Protection from illnesses
  • Saved from being handicap
  • Good education
  • Good memory and wisdom
  • Extraordinary powers
  • Respect and honour
  • Salvation from any calamity
  • On repenting from sins and performing good deeds
  • Saved from physical, spiritual or psychological diseases.

True believer is grateful in every condition

It is related from Sohaib that the Holy Prophet said:

“The state of a believer is so strange that his every state is good for him. And this virtue is blessed to no one except the believer that if any trouble comes to him and he remains grateful to Allah then it becomes a source of reward for him and if he becomes patient then also is rewardful for him.”

Being grateful for each blessing is compulsory on everyone. Allah has reminded to be grateful by mentioning His blessings repeatedly in the Holy Quran. So that His people would not forget Him because man recognizes some of the blessings but does not recognize some, for example; in his body his internal organs are performing their functions automatically and he does not even know how they work.

Being grateful on the blessing to perform devotions

If a person is guided towards Allah’s obedience and servility then this is another special blessing for which he should be grateful individually. Because Allah does not grant the blessing of His obedience, servility and invocation to everyone. So one should not be arrogant on devotions rather he should be grateful to Allah that He has not placed him among those who are oblivious from His Essence.

Apart from that if Allah chooses someone to serve His religion and spread it in the world then it is also a great blessing because He does not grant the favour of this blessing to everyone. Allah says in sura Ash-Shura:

“Allah chooses whom He pleases (for exclusive nearness) in His presence, and shows the path to (come) towards Himself to everyone who turns (towards Allah) heartily.” (42:13)

Likewise Allah provides righteous guidance to whom He wills and leads astray whom He wills. Thus the blessing of guidance to walk on the path of Allah is also the favour of Allah so we should be grateful as much as we can on this blessing and favour of Allah.

Being grateful for every blessing collectively

There is also a kind of being grateful called collective gratefulness. Allah bestowed upon us His limitless mercy, kindness, blessings and countless favours. His attribute of mercy and kindness is a way to show His love and care towards us. Allah created us and provided everything to fulfil our needs, in this way He showers His blessing, love and mercy on us. He listens to our prayers and forgives our sins. He values the virtuous and confers the blessing of wisdom and benevolence on them.

Not only this but when we are surrounded in troubles, He shows us ways of our salvation and takes us under His shelter. He helps us in difficulties and becomes the light of guidance during troubles. This is the first identity and recognition of Allah’s compassion which compels us to bow and prostate before Him and be grateful to Him.

Allah has told us that every blessing is from Allah so that we worship only Him, be grateful to Him and ask only Him for more blessings. Allah says in Surah Al-Nakhl:

وَ مَا بِکُمۡ مِّنۡ نِّعۡمَۃٍ فَمِنَ اللّٰہِ ثُمَّ اِذَا مَسَّکُمُ الضُّرُّ فَاِلَیۡہِ تَجۡـَٔرُوۡنَ ﴿ۚ۵۳﴾

Meaning: And whatever blessing you have been provided with is from Allah alone. Then, when some distress afflicts you, you wail and weep only before Him. (16:53)

Being grateful collectively for the attribute of Lordship

Another reason for being grateful to Allah collectively is His attribute of Lordship which means that Allah never forgets His creation instead He is ever protective and helpful. He is watching our every deed and providing every facility to His slaves. Oxygen for breathing, the light of sun for warmth, suitable environment for development, healthy foods for survival, different kinds of fruits and vegetables to sate the sense of taste and facilities to satisfy the needs of man. This is the manifestation of His Lordship. He provides nourishment for the baby in the womb of mother and makes the environment suitable for it. Allah says:

Meaning: O people! Persistently remember the favour that Allah has bestowed on you. Is there any Creator other than Allah, Who may provide you sustenance from the heaven and the earth? There is no God but He. So where are you wandering, disorientated? (35:3)

  • Meaning: And call to mind the blessing of Allah (conferred) upon you, and (also recall) the promise which He took from you (under affirmation) when you declared (agreeing): ‘We heard (Allah’s command) and we obeyed (it).’ And always fear Allah. Verily, Allah knows best (the secrets of) hearts. (5:7)

Blessing of Faqr- The best reason for being grateful

The best form of being grateful collectively is to thank Allah for the blessing that He has chosen only the humans for His gnosis. Other creatures are also praising Allah but devotion of humans is elevated on the basis that Allah has kept the ability in him to fulfil the obligation of Allah’s gnosis. If he does not acquire the gnosis of Allah then he has not reached the level of the best creation rather he is just like other ordinary creatures. Hence, to acquire the gnosis of Allah and surrender and submit before Allah’s will is the main purpose of the creation of man. Other matters have secondly importance. This is the greatest beneficence of Allah on us that He has chosen only humans for this bestowal and to be grateful to Him we should enlighten our inward with His gnosis.

One should feel pride on being born as a Muslim. Nothing is better than the blessing of being from the Umma of Prophet Mohammad. The blessing due to which every Prophet prayed to be from the Umma of Prophet Mohammad is the heritage of Faqr. Faqr is the only blessing upon which the Holy Prophet has  expressed pride. He said:

Meaning: Faqr is my pride and Faqr is from me. Due to it I am distinguished among all the Prophets and Messengers.

The true heirs of Faqr

From the Holy Prophet the heritage of Faqr reached Ali ibn Abi Talib and transferred in steps to Al-Ghawth Al-Azam. Then this heritage reached Hazrat Sultan Bahoo and in this era Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman is the heir of this heritage.

Hence the heir of the Trust of Faqr is the perfect Fakir and Universal Divine Man because he is the heir of the real heritage of Prophet Mohammad. If one achieves the blessing of his company then no other blessing is precious than this. Because in the company of the true Fakir one can purify his innerself and enliven his inward. If the seeker adopts the company of the Fakir then he, after gaining the gnosis of Allah, can gradually attain the closeness of Allah. The one who attains closeness of Allah, should be grateful as much as he can as this is the most worthy blessing in this era of materialism.

True Fakirs are rare in the world but only due to the presence of such honourable entities the world is sustained. Al-Ghawth Al-Azam says about them:

“They are chiefs of the citizens. Because of them the troubles get away from the creation, the rain pours down and different fruits and vegetable grow.” (al-Fath al-Rabbani section 12)

Ism-e-Allah Zaat- Another priceless blessing

Another priceless blessing which we get from the court of the Fakirs is Ism-e-Allah Zaat. By its invocation and contemplation the seeker gains two main inward level which are presence in the Mohammadan Assembly and annihilation in Allah. Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman has spread the beneficence of Ism-e-Allah Zaat all around the world and is inviting people towards it through Tehreek Dawat-e-Faqr (Regd.) So that the Muslims become the true seekers of Allah and achieve the gnosis of Allah thus enlighten their inwards.

Hence, it is necessary for the Mohammadan umma especially the seekers of Allah to be grateful for the blessing of Faqr. This is the greatest blessing of the universe. This blessing is found by the grace of the beloved and lovers of Allah (the Saints). To be grateful for this blessing even the sacrifice of our life and wealth is not enough.

The conditions for being grateful

A person should make compulsory on him to perform following deeds to be grateful for each blessing:

  • Love Allah
  • Be obedient to Him
  • Submit before Allah
  • Purify himself
  • Perform devotions purely for Allah
  • Engage in Divine praise
  • Seek perseverance and strong faith from Allah
  • Repent from the sins
  • Stay away from the forbidden
  • Respect the Prophets, Saints and the pious.
  • Follow the orders of Allah as much as possible
  • Acknowledge each blessing with truth of certainty and accept that this is only the benevolence of Allah
  • Be kind towards Allah’s creation
  • Be occupied in the praise of Allah because by the grace of extreme admiration of Allah man attains high levels.

Verily, betterment is for the people who are grateful to Allah.

The disadvantages of not being grateful

Disregarding the blessing of Allah or making the wrong use of the blessing is considered being ungrateful to Allah. True servitude is that we should be grateful for each and every blessing whether it is major or minor. So that Allah would increase its beneficence. Otherwise it is possible that Allah would take that blessing away from us. He says:

Meaning: And (recall) when your Lord proclaimed: ‘If you are grateful, I shall certainly increase (My blessings on) you, and if you are ungrateful, then My torment is surely severe.’  (14:7)

Hence, the best form of being grateful for each blessing is to express gratitude by tongue and make good use of the blessing. If Allah has provided someone with power or kingdom then he should use his powers honestly. He should not be cruel to anyone instead he should use each blessing provided to him for the betterment of Allah’s creation.

The worst form of being ungrateful is to deny the teachings of the Quran and Sunna. There is no goodness in being grateful for other blessings if we deny the religion of Islam.

Allah says:

Meaning: The one who denies faith (in the commandments of Allah), all his work is ruined, and he will (also) be amongst the losers in the Hereafter. (5:5)

The blessing should not be used in sin

Syeda Ayesha Siddiqa says:

“The right of the Provider of the blessing is that at least we should not use that blessing in sinful deed.”

This means that we should use each blessing of Allah for righteous deeds for example the powers, wealth and authorities. So that it could become the source of being grateful to Allah and earns  goodwill of Allah. Wrong use of blessings of Allah invites the torment of Allah. It also becomes  the cause of  Allah’s displeasure . If we will not be grateful to Allah for any of His blessing then He will take that blessing away from us. That is why it is obligatory on us to be grateful to Allah for His each blessing in every condition.

Concluding thought:

Today the world is suffering from serious situations. This is the result of being ungrateful to Allah and using His blessings disobediently. The main reason behind this is being away from Allah and His gnosis. Unless we gain the gnosis of Allah neither we can fulfil the right of slavehood nor we can be properly grateful to Allah for His each blessing. Hence, we must acquire the gnosis of Allah.

We invite all the seekers of Allah to join the Sarwari Qadri order and to adopt the company of the perfect spiritual guide Sultan-ul-Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib-ur-Rehman in order to acquire the gnosis of Allah. Hence, get the greatest blessing of Faqr and then be grateful for this blessing every moment.

Meaning:  The truth is that even if we sacrifice our life for Allah, His due right would not be fulfilled as life is also a blessing given by Him.

What is being grateful?

To be thankful to Allah or to praise Him for His blessings is called being grateful. Allah has emphasized at many places in the Holy Quran to be grateful to Him. He says:

Meaning: So, worship Allah and be amongst the grateful. (39:66)

Meaning: So remember Me, I shall remember you. And always be grateful to Me and never be ungrateful to Me. (2:152)

How can I truly be grateful?

There are different ways of being grateful to Allah. That is; to praise Allah in every condition, worship Him truly, love Him devotedly, follow His true people, be kind to His creation, make good use of His each blessing and never make complains.

Why is being grateful so important?

Being grateful is as much important as every other devotion is. That is because if we will be grateful to Allah then He will reward us more. Allah has mentioned several times in the Holy Quran the rewards of being grateful and torments of being ungrateful to Him. Allah says:

Meaning: And (recall) when your Lord proclaimed: ‘If you are grateful, I shall certainly increase (My blessings on) you, and if you are ungrateful, then My torment is surely severe.’  (14:7)
